Who Was the First Jedi and Sith? - Star Wars FAQ

The question of who the first Jedi and Sith were has been debated for years and still there is no definitive answer. You see, it’s not just a simple case of naming two individuals, we have to weave through the history of each order, to the very beginning…

Firstly, let’s discover the origins of the Force. Around 37,453 BBY peaceful monks became one of the first groups to discover and study the Force, including midi-chlorians. Although the shamans of Dathomir and the Selkath scholars from Manaan had also developed similar ideas, they were isolated from each other, meaning they could not share their views. After the foundation of the Order of Dai Bendu and years of isolation, the Dai Bendu monks discovered a half-buried pyramidal structure. After calling it the “Tho Yor”, they discovered it was actually a starship, which transported them to the planet Tython. There, the monks were joined by seven other Tho Yor, which dispatched many other Force-sensitive organisations. The new Tythans then became the founders of the Je'daii Order. A monk named Lha-Mi became one of the first Temple Masters. The downfall of the Je'daii Order came from the Force Wars, where its dark side (Ashla) and light side (Bogan) followers clashed. Following this, those on the light side, led by Rajivari, Garon Jard, Cala Brin and Ters Sendon, founded the Jedi Order. Although there were Force-sensitives before them fighting for the Jedi cause, you could argue the first Jedi were those founding members. In terms of the first Sith, you could argue Ajunta Pall. Though there was a Sith species which existed for millennia before him, Pall was the first ever Dark Lord of the Sith. He also founded the Sith Empire. Other notable early names are Hakagram Graush, XoXaan, Remulus Dreypa, Sorzus Syn and Karness Muur.

Hopefully in Disney’s “new” canon they can clear up the exact first of each side. However, at least you all now know some of the key players at the birth of each order.
