Star Wars Weapons Lore - The Geonosian Sonic Blaster

(Canon)

Manufactured by Gordarl Weaponsmiths, the Geonosian sonic blaster was the standard sidearm of Geonosian soldiers, and saw increased use during the Clone Wars. They fired sonic waves of energy, but what other characteristics defined the weapon? Well, let’s find out…

(Legends)

Well before the Galactic Empire’s rule over the galaxy, Geonosian Weaponsmiths researched the sonic wave theory. As a result, th

ey eventually constructed basic generators that converted sonic vibrations into other forms of energy. Geonosian miners then developed sonic hammers, whose basic premise was later developed into sonic blaster weaponry. Aside from the Geonosian sonic blaster, Gordarl weaponsmiths also created a larger, artillery version of the weapon: the LR1K sonic cannon. Around the time of the Galactic Civil War, a carbine version of the blaster was also produced.

The weapon was over a meter long and consisted of seven components; a grip, an aiming vane, an emitter cowl, an oscillation chamber, a reduction chamber, a plasma containment charge chamber, and a trigger. Speaking of which, the trigger was oddly placed and hard to hold, let alone fire, for any non-Geonosian, rendering it only useful in the hands of the insectoid species. With a capacity of 30 shots, the weapon’s projectile consisted of a ball of energy, encased within a containment sphere. Upon the containments sphere’s rupture, the ball of energy would explode in a contained omnidirectional blast, causing instant death to a living organism by rupturing their internal organs, which sounds pretty nasty. Such a display occurred during the First Battle of Geonosis, where the Jedi forces were met with the Geonosian sonic blaster and its larger cousin, the aforementioned LR1K sonic cannon. However, with an optimum range of 15 meters and a maximum range of 40 meters, the spheres could also devastate inanimate targets as well, since the intense sonic energy was capable of exploding targets…

Now it’s time for this week’s question: do you think the Geonosian sonic blaster was the optimum weapon to use against Jedi? Let me know in the comments below.
