Star Wars Lore – Commander Gree

Clone Commander Gree served as the leader of the 41st Elite Corps during the Clone Wars. Clad in his distinctive camouflaged armour, which he wore to better blend into jungle surroundings, the clone was no stranger to long-term missions on alien worlds. One such assignment was the Battle of Kashyyyk. Although Gree faithfully served Luminara Unduli and her fellow Jedi Generals, his loyalty ultimately lay with the Galactic Republic. So when Supreme Chancellor Palpatine issued Order 66, Gree instinctively turned his blaster on Grand Master Yoda and prepared to fire…

No different to any other clone trooper destined to serve the Grand Army of the Republic, CC-1004 was cloned from the DNA of infamous bounty hunter Jango Fett. During his time on Kamino, 1004 became fixated with the hugely varied alien races and cultures throughout the galaxy. As a result, the clone named himself after a little-known alien species called the Gree. After completing his training, Gree was placed in command of the 41st Elite Corps. Under the tutelage of Jedi General Luminara Unduli, the 41st specialised in long-term deployments on alien worlds, where they built alliances with the native alien populace. During the first year of the Clone Wars, Gree and Green Company (a division of the 41st Elite Corps) were dispatched to Rodia to rescue senator Padmé Amidala, who had been captured by the Trade Federation Viceroy, Nute Gunray. After successfully apprehending Amidala’s captor, Gree readied Gunray for transportation to Coruscant. Despite facing a bribery attempt in exchange for his freedom, Gree led Gunray to his holding cell aboard the Tranquility (Luminara Unduli’s flagship), where he faced interrogation. But not long into the voyage, the Venator-class Star Destroyer was attacked by Separatist forces. During the chaos, Gree was left to watch over Gunray alongside Captain Argyus. However, the Senate Commando turned his back on the Republic and freed the Viceroy, leading to a scuffle between the two soldiers. Although Gree managed to knock out Argyus, he was in turn rendered unconscious by Gunray, allowing his escape.

Later in the Clone Wars, Gree accompanied Unduli and her Padawan learner, Barriss Offee, to the planet of Geonosis. In an attempt to destroy Archduke Poggle the Lesser’s primary droid factory, Unduli and Anakin Skywalker led their forces on the ground whilst their two Padawans infiltrated the catacombs beneath. During the mission, Gree and his comrades faced ray shielded super tanks and innumerable droid forces. However, Offee and Ahsoka Tano managed to destroy the factory from the catacombs, rendering the mission a success.

In 19 BBY, when the Separatists attacked Kashyyyk, Grand Master Yoda personally departed for the world alongside the 41st Elite Corps. For the mission, Gree donned camouflaged Phase II clone trooper armour to better suit himself with the planet’s lush greenery. From their command post in Kachirho, Yoda and Gree watched the battle below unfold, where the Wookiee led charge was backed by the flanking 41st. However, midway through the conflict, Gree received a transmission from Supreme Chancellor Palpatine ordering him to execute Order 66. Without a moment’s hesitation, Gree signalled to another soldier, and they positioned themselves behind Yoda. However, as they were about to gun down the Jedi they were loyal to only a few minutes prior, Yoda sensed the treachery, leapt in the air, and decapitated both clones. As an incredible military career was destroyed in the blink of an eye, thousands of Jedi were gunned down by their trusty clone troopers. Order 66 marked the beginning of the end for both the Jedi Order and the Galactic Republic…

Now it’s time for this week’s question: is Gree one of your favourite clone troopers? Let me know in the comments below.
