Star Wars Fan Theory – Rey Will Become the Villain?!

The Force Awakens introduced us to the next Luke Skywalker, the main protagonist who will ultimately defeat the evil-doers and bring peace to the galaxy. But what if, in what would be one of the biggest swerves in all of Star Wars, Rey becomes the villain?

When it comes to the seventh entry in the Star Wars cinematic series, one big complaint fans have is how quickly Rey was able to control the Force, especially when compared to Luke Skywalker, who spent months with Yoda honing his skills. There are a few explanations for such an anomaly. Firstly, Kylo Ren could have broken some sort of Force barrier in Rey’s mind while probing her memories. Alternatively, she could have learned how to control the Force as a child. After all, Ren discovered a memory that perfectly described the location of the inaugural Jedi Temple. However, Rey may have actually used the dark side. Unlike Luke, who witnessed Obi-Wan using the Force several times, Rey has so far only experienced the dark side of the Force, courtesy of Ren, meaning she can only copy that one source. Furthermore, in the canon novelisation – during Rey’s lightsaber duel with Kylo – a mysterious voice whispers to her: “Kill him”. Could this be a case of the dark side communicating with Rey, an attempt at seduction?

Still not convinced? Take a look at the poster for The Force Awakens. Rey’s staff aligns perfectly with Kylo Ren’s lightsaber, implying a possible merging of the two later down the line. In addition, Luke seemed shocked and reluctant to see Rey. Maybe it was because he anticipated his “daughter” would ask for all the missed Life Day presents, but maybe the whole reason Luke left her on Jakku was because he sensed the dark side within her. Think about, after losing his new generation of Jedi, damage limitation would have been a priority. Perhaps instead of mirroring Luke’s story from A New Hope, Rey will actually follow the path Anakin Skywalker pursued to become the series’ ultimate villain…

I personally really like this theory, mainly because it will definitely swerve everyone anticipating just a rehash of the original trilogy. And it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that Rey will be seduced by the dark side. After all, until plans were changed late on, Luke Skywalker’s final lines in Return of the Jedi were going to be "Now I am Vader. Now I will go and kill the [Rebel] fleet and I will rule the universe." But, with that being said, I think it’s more likely Disney will focus on the redemption of Ren rather than Rey’s fall to the dark side. As a result, I will rate this theory: 3/10. I hope I haven’t just spoiled Episode VIII! Do you agree with my rating? Let me know in the comments below if you think Rey will join the dark side.
