Star Wars Species and Races Lore - Yoda’s Species (Legends)

The species to which legendary Jedi Master Yoda belonged was so ancient and mysterious that its true name was never recorded. Furthermore, very few members of the race ever made their presence known in the galaxy. With such intrigue surrounding the small green humanoids, let’s uncover the hidden history of Yoda’s species…

Residing from an unnamed and unknown planet, members of Yoda’s species were small, green-skinned and green-blooded, with long pointed ears, wrinkled foreheads, sharp teeth, tridactyl hands and, more often than not, anisodactyl feet. While the average lifespan of the species was unknown, most lived for centuries. Yoda, in particular, passed away at exactly 900 years old. The majority of Yoda’s species spoke in the Galactic Basic Standard language. However, they utilised irregular grammar and sentence structure, often placing verbs after the object and subject. In addition, most beings in the galaxy considered their carnivorous diet disgusting.

All known members of Yoda’s species were wise and incredibly Force-sensitive. As the Grand Master of the Jedi Order, a title he held for over two centuries, Yoda became one of the most powerful Jedi ever. Likewise, Yaddle and Vandar Tokare both possessed great power, which granted them their respective seats on Coruscant and Dantooine’s Jedi Councils. A fourth Jedi Master, Oteg, fought during the Cold War, and the lesser Known Jedi Knight Minch made his mark around 700 BBY, defeating a Dark Jedi Master single-handedly in combat. Unlike the aforementioned Jedi Masters who readily displayed exceptional calmness and self-control, Minch harboured a fiery temper and often lost his cool. Finally, in the Valley of the Jedi on Ruusan stood a statue for an unnamed member of Yoda’s species.

Yoda’s species closely resembled the Lannik, as they too were short, with large pointed ears. However, even though Yoda was mistaken for a Lannik on at least one occasion, it is highly unlikely both species shared a genetic connection, due to their much more humanoid appearance and different evolutionary history…

Now it’s time for this week’s question: do you like the fact Yoda’s species are shrouded in mystery, or would you prefer the Expanded Universe to detail their history? Let me know in the comments below.
