Star Wars Lore – Species and Races – Asogians: The Extra-Terrestrials (Legends)

Following Steven Spielberg’s 1982 film E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, where he included a Yoda cameo, George Lucas promised to feature the famous alien creature in his next project. Subsequently, a group of Extra-Terrestrials briefly appeared during a session of congress in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. As an Easter egg, the cameo was never meant to serve as part of the Star Wars canon. However, the lore of the Asogians, as they came to be known, was expanded upon over the years since. With that being said, let’s explore the species that seemingly “phoned home”…

Hailing from Brodo Asogi, a planet located in the Perinn sector of the Outer Rim Territories, Asogians were small, paddle-footed sentient beings, with arms long enough to reach the ground as they walked. Perched atop their extensible necks was a head dominated by two large eyes, which ranged from blue to red in colour. Like many other species, such as the reptilian Anx and the furry Togorians, Asogians routinely went about their business unclothed, revealing their completely hairless brown or yellow skin. While some of the species were known to consume meat, all members used grub-sticks as eating utensils.

By 33 BBY, the Asogians were represented in the Galactic Senate by Senator Grebleips and his three aides. The very same representative made headlines in 22 BBY, when he declared his intention to fund an extra-galactic expedition project. Grebleips also joined the Delegation of 2000 - a group who protested against the political system Emperor Palpatine instated following the climax of the Clone Wars. Unfortunately, the senator and sixty-two other delegates were arrested by Imperial Intelligence and charged with conspiracy and treason for their part in the Jedi Order’s foiled revolt against Palpatine. Like so many other planets around the same time period, the homeworld of the Asogians fell into the hands of the Galactic Empire. During the subsequent Galactic Civil War, on the Imperial-controlled world Solay, a wheelchair confined member of the Asogian species made a name for himself as an infochant (someone who traded information and intelligence for credits). Braxas, as he was called, later hired the young and skilled Rebel Alliance pilot Luke Skywalker to transport him off-world, so he could live a free and happy life…

Now it’s time for this week’s question: would you like to see more of the Asogian race in future Star Wars works? Let me know in the either the card poll on-screen or the comments below. In the previous episode I asked who your favourite member of the Zabrak species was. Out of the 180 that voted, over 100 of you prefer Darth Maul. I totally agree, he’s by far my favourite Zabrak too!
