Star Wars Weapons Lore – Yuuzhan Vong Amphistaffs (Legends)

Weapons, regardless of their aesthetic look or functionality, are instruments or devices designed to inflict bodily harm, physical damage, and even death. I’m sure we can all agree on that. It also goes without saying that weapons are inanimate objects, right? Well, apparently the Yuuzhan Vong disagree…

Amphistaffs were fully organic beings native to the Yuuzhan Vong homeworld. They grew in trios from small, leathery sacks known as polyps, which they used to snatch and draw prey towards. Eventually, when fully grown to around three meters long, the amphistaffs broke free and slithered into the wilderness, leaving their polyps to die. Roaming free, the creatures were durable and cunning. However, to continue their species’ reproduction, amphistaffs eventually morphed into polyps. If a Yuuzhan Vong warrior caught an amphistaff as it left its polyp, both were bound together. The connection was so strong that the creature loyally served its new master in battle, either as a quarterstaff, a spear, or a whip. What’s more, the amphistaff could change its state within the blink of an eye to catch enemies off guard. Often used to coil around lightsabers before unleashing a deadly venomous strike, amphistaffs could recover from almost any wound. However, despite their seemingly indestructible nature, repeated blunt trauma or decapitation would kill the creature once and for all.

As touched upon earlier, amphistaffs were incredibly venomous creatures. Capable of spitting venom at targets twenty meters away, amphistaffs usually directed their spray towards the eyes of others, causing immediate blindness. Furthermore, upon skin contact, the venom seeped through the target’s pores to enter their bloodstream, ultimately choking off the oxygen supply for a twenty hour long excruciating death. However, Jedi Master Mara Jade Skywalker eventually created a biotoxin drill that could lessen the venom’s effects, if administered early enough. Despite the immense physical danger possessed by amphistaffs, perhaps their biggest threat was psychological damage. Just imagine stepping into the shoes of a Republic soldier during the height of the Yuuzhan Vong War to face a savage extragalactic species and their vicious biological weapons…

Now it’s time for this week’s question: how would you combat the Yuuzhan Vong Amphistaff? Let me know in the comments below.
