Star Wars Species and Races Lore – Angels

In Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, young Anakin Skywalker asked Padmé Amidala if she was an angel. Unfortunately, despite her looks, Amidala was just a regular Human. However, the creatures described by Skywalker in the very same scene were not subject to the work of in-universe fiction, or lousy chat up lines! That’s right, angels did exist in the galaxy far, far away. So, with that in mind, let’s explore the most beautiful creatures in the Star Wars universe…

Known in the wider galaxy as early as 25, 793 BBY, more than seven centuries before the formation of the Galactic Republic, the Diathim evolved on Iego and the largest of its forty-two moons, Millius Prime. Despite their name, the species were commonly referred to as “the Angels”. This was due to both their appearance and nature. In addition to their peaceful existence and aura of kindness, the Diathim - behind their radiance of blazing white and yellow light - were beautiful feminine humanoids. While descriptions of the Angels differed between witnesses, most detailed the Diathim as slender, two to three-meter-tall beings with six blade-shaped wings. Capable of gliding and flying freely as a result, the species could venture out into the vacuum of interplanetary space without the assistance of a protective suit or life support. Such an ability was used to fuel a fascination with spacecrafts, for any ships near Iego or Millius Prime were immediately mobbed by the Angels. Unfortunately, due to their natural hypnotic abilities, curious Diathim tended to cause accidents. For example, mesmerised observers often plunged their vessels into violent crash-landings. Consequently, despite their kind and peaceful nature, the species were regarded as dangerous entities.

Fun Fact: With no apparent language of their own, some Angels spoke in the Galactic Basic Standard language, the most used dialect in the galaxy.

During the Clone Wars, the Confederacy of Independent Systems invaded Iego with hundreds of battle droids, before snatching Millius Prime from the Angels. They then emplaced a laser web to prevent any escape from the two habitats. However, while investigating the Blue Shadow Virus on Iego, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker helped deactivate the laser field, freeing the Angels in the process. While on Iego, both Jedi encountered an Angel refugee. Just like the aforementioned description, the tall female possessed milky white skin, blond hair, grey eyes, a tiny nose, long limbs, and large wings…
