Will Rogue One be the Best Star Wars Movie Ever?
I think Rogue One has the potential to be the best Star Wars film yet, and - in this collaboration video with Loki Doki - I'll tell you why!
It Takes Place During the Age of the Empire
If your favourite Star Wars era is not the Age of the Empire, it’s probably the Fall of the Republic. Thankfully for us, Rogue One takes us to a galaxy not far removed from the Clone Wars. Furthermore, we’ll no doubt feel a great deal of nostalgia as Vader, stormtroopers, Rebels and more fill our screens. However, Rogue One has the freedom to take that nostalgia and turn it into nothing you’ve ever seen before. The movie is labelled as both a “war movie” and a “heist movie”, so picture this: a familiar galaxy, a spectacular era, a whole new experience!
An Unfamiliar Tone
As we’ve just covered, Rogue One is labelled partly as a war movie. And they’re not joking! The trailers depict Rogue One as really gritty and definitely not shy to highlight the harsh reality of war and the uphill battle the Rebels face against the Empire. This, as a result, translates to the tone as well. Rogue One director Gareth Edwards is pulling no punches. He has made this film pretty dark, so much so that Disney called for reshoots to apparently “lighten the mood”. This is as dark as Disney will allow, which is an exciting prospect. Just look at Revenge of the Sith - that is one of the darkest Star Wars movies in the entire saga, which is why many fans cite it as a better overall package than one or two of the original trilogy’s films.
Gareth Edwards is a Massive Star Wars Fan
Here is a direct quote from Gareth Edwards:
"Ever since i saw star wars i knew exactly what i wanted to do for the rest of my life - join the rebel alliance! I could not be more excited & honoured to go on this mission with Lucasfilm."
Gareth Edwards is clearly a massive fan of Star Wars, and so it’s only right to have faith in the guy. When someone cares so much about something, when they grow up with that particular thing, they genuinely love it. I can’t see someone as passionate as Gareth screwing this up. Also, remember what happened when another huge Star Wars fan directed a Star Wars movie? Yeah, The Force Awakens was a massive hit. It’s also worth mentioning that George Lucas has seen the movie, and this is what he thinks of it according to Edwards:
“I can die happy now. He really liked the movie. It was the most important review to me.”
The Cast is Incredible
Star Wars has a track record of hiring unknown actors. But that doesn’t mean each film lacks its star power, and Rogue One is no different. Whether it be Mads Mikkelsen, Forest Whitaker or Ben Mendelsohn, Rogue One is filled with incredible actors. So, expect good performances all around.
It Can Take Risks
The main complaint about The Force Awakens is how similar its plot is to A New Hope. Furthermore, many think there was far too much fan-service. Both are valid points. However, Disney had to play safe. Think about it, there was so much hype for Episode VII. It had been ten years since the previous Star Wars movie, the rights had changed hands, it had to deliver. Abrams and his crew chose to copy elements of the original trilogy because it’s untouchable. We look past any flaws it has because many of us grew up with those films, and because they revolutionised cinema. So, calling back to some of the greatest movies ever made was sensible, and now Disney have a solid foundation for their new trilogy. Rogue One, on the other hand, isn’t necessarily confined by the same restraints. Granted, a poor reception won’t look good for the anthology series. But Rogue One has no connection to new trilogy, it’s not part of the main saga. Therefore, the creators can take risks. They can tell the story they want to tell. They can make a Star Wars film like no other, and it’s because of this reason why I think it could be the best Star Wars film ever made. Expect the unexpected. Expect to have your mind blown.
