Star Wars Lore Episode CLXV – Kashyyyk

Home to the fearsome Wookiee species, and located on key hyperspace lanes, Kashyyyk became a navigational point of great significance for the Republic. However, due to its loyalty to the Jedi Order, the Galactic Empire were quick to conquer the planet, subjugating its inhabitants to decades of cruel torture...

Land of the Wookiees

The temperate jungle planet of Kashyyyk was located in the Mytaranor sector of the Mid Rim. It was home to can-cell, terentatek, webweaver spiders, wroshyr louse, and – more importantly – the Wookiee species. These fearsome warriors were far from the primitive beasts many misjudged them to be. And their arboreal homeworld was a fantastic showcase of their technical prowess and artistic vision. Whether it be their intimidating, insect-like aircraft, or the sweeping blend of city-jungle architecture, the Wookiees were master-craftsmen. Despite this, however, the species were truly at their best behind the destructive blasts of a bowcaster or the simple but effective trajectory of the traditional spear. This made the Wookiees a key ally for the Republic and a dreaded enemy of the Separatists.

With a diameter of 12,765 kilometers, Kashyyyk was home to several key points of interest, like the supposedly cursed and haunted Black Forest. Unfortunately, such a morbid moniker became commonplace by 5 ABY, as the lush planet was plagued by deforestation, dried lakes and poisonous black mould. Another location of the note was the coastal city of Kachirho. This architectural marvel spiraled around the trunk of an enormous wroshyr tree near the Wawaatt Archipelago. Moreover, it bolstered multiple piers and docks that extended into the freshwater lagoon. But there was a reason why most of the planet's cities lay behind its dense foliage and not out in the open, as was discovered nearing the climax of the Clone Wars...

The Battle of Kashyyyk Due to its position on key hyperspace lanes, Kashyyyk was targeted by the Confederacy of Independent Systems, in 19 BBY. However, their charge into Kachirho was met by resistance from the native Wookiee populace and clone troopers of the Republic's Grand Army. Furthermore, Grand Master Yoda was dispatched by the Jedi Council to oversee the battle. The reinforcements helped chieftain Tarfful and his soldiers repel their droid counterparts, though it came at a cost. As it turned out, the Clone Wars was nothing more than a cleverly constructed ruse to overthrow the Jedi Order and topple the Galactic Republic. So, at the behest of Order 66, hundreds of Jedi fell to the blasters of their once-loyal clone troopers. Yoda managed to escape such a fate; but Kashyyyk wasn't so lucky...

Age of the Empire

In the wake of Order 66 and the rise of the Galactic Empire, Kashyyyk was conquered by Imperial forces and labelled G5-623. Moreover, as a consequence of their loyalty to the Republic and Jedi Order, many Wookiees were enslaved. Some of whom remained on their homeworld, where they were forced to axe down the wroshyr trees, while others were dispatched to construction sites of the Death Star, or the spice mines of Kessel. Regardless, the species faced harsh working conditions which drastically shortened their lifespans. The Wookiees did try to fight back on several occasions, though they were quickly thwarted each time. No longer were they the dominant race that so many feared.

Thankfully, shortly after the Battle of Endor, Han Solo and Chewbacca led a Wookiee revolt on G5-623. Their efforts, aided by the New Republic, drove back the Imperial forces to the point of surrender. Thus, Kashyyyk finally faced liberation...
