The Afterlife in Star Wars – Heaven and Hell (Legends)
Death is one of life's greatest mysteries. For all of the theories and speculation, no one really knows what happens when we draw our final breath. But what about the galaxy far, far away? What happens when some of our favourite characters kick the bucket? Well, let's find out!
Considering the fantastical nature of the Star Wars series, I think we would all be rather disappointed if there wasn't some kind of afterlife. So it's comforting to know that there was somewhere for powerful Jedi and Sith to, in a sense, live on. The Netherworld of the Force served as the final resting place for the souls of deceased Force-users. Inhabitants included Obi-Wan Kenobi - after one final talk with Luke Skywalker in 9 ABY - and Yoda, who continued to teach those recently deceased. The realm was also thought to have housed Qui-Gon Jinn following his death at the hands of Darth Maul, though he managed to return to the physical universe as a Force ghost. Despite this, there were many who doubted the Netherworld's existence, not the least of which was Darth Plagueis. The Sith Lord considered it nothing more than the dissipating of one's mind into the hum of background energy and accepting its fate. Moreover, he believed the feeling of peace to be a normal consequence of the death, and that only the weak would tolerate the loss of their identity.
Following Plagueis' very own demise, it's fair to say he would have wound up in Chaos. Yes, as it turns out, the idea of purgatory isn't exclusive to the Milky Way. The aptly named region for deceased Dark Jedi, Sith Lords, and other cruel beings was envisioned as a large and dark pit guarded by six impenetrable gates – or so the people of Naboo thought. Its exact state was left to the imagination, though Chaos was said to be populated by the likes of the Dark Underlord, Marka Ragnos, and the wandering, disembodied, and crazed spirit of Darth Sidious. However, “The Void” wasn't as secure as you'd like to think, as Palpatine managed to escape through the aid of Sith Spirits and Sate Pestage. It actually took several deceased Jedi to prevent another breakout following his final death on Onderon...
So there we have it, afterlife from a certain point of view. But what realm intrigues you the most? And would you rather populate the heaven-like Netherworld of the Force, or carry on as a Force ghost? Let us know in the comments below!
