4 Celebrities Who Loved The Star Wars Prequels

It's not everyday you hear someone defend the Star Wars prequels, what with the ever-growing internet discontent for the movies. Yet there are small pockets of fans who enjoyed and still love watching Episodes I through III. And by no means is this exclusive to Star Wars fans like you and I, as even well-known celebrities have come forward to at least praise The Phantom Menace and its follow-up films. So with that in mind, here are 4 celebrities who enjoyed the Star Wars prequels.

Number 04. Ewan McGregor

Ewan McGregor was arguably the best part of the Star Wars prequel trilogy. He portrayed Obi-Wan Kenobi with such charisma and elegance to give even the legendary Alec Guinness a run for his money. He achieved such while somehow adding his own unique twist to the character. This is why countless fans old and new have lobbied yearly for an Obi-Wan anthology movie. Even McGregor himself has shown interest in the potential spin-off, despite having categorically moved on from the franchise. In short, he was pleased with the prequel films, and even more satisfied to have been directly involved. McGregor also enjoyed portraying a character that appealed to children – something he wasn't used to at the time.

Number 03. Mark Hamill

From his days as Luke Skywalker in the original trilogy, Mark Hamill knew all too well that pleasing everyone was an almost unattainable goal. But this did not prepare him for the monumental backlash Episodes I, II and III received. He was baffled by the critics, especially those who claimed their “childhoods were ruined”. Furthermore, Mark went on to call out those who harshly treated Jake Lloyd for his performance as young Anakin Skywalker in The Phantom Menace:

“I’m still angry about the way they treated Jake Lloyd. He was only 10 years old, that boy, and he did exactly what George [Lucas] wanted him to do. Believe me, I understand clunky dialogue.”

Number 02. Riz Ahmed

Continuing with the trend of Star Wars actors defending the franchise, Rogue One's Riz Ahmed has spoken at length about his appreciation of the prequels. Firstly, the British-born actor has voiced a necessity for Star Wars films to feel unique from one another. Otherwise, in his mind, they'd be boring. So it should come as no surprise that he enjoyed the complex political undertones, not to mention the Clone Wars. However, like so many others, Riz disliked a certain clumsy Gungan. Sorry, Jar Jar!

Number 01. Kevin Smith

When it comes to die-hard Star Wars fans, look no further than American filmmaker, actor, and comedian Kevin Smith. His love for the series began at the age of nine, when he witnessed Star Wars for the very first time. He was instantly blown away by the stunning visuals, heroic and feisty characters, and – of course – the awesome lightsabers. Kevin also came to thoroughly enjoy The Force Awakens, as a result, stating that it made him feel like a kid again sitting in the theatre. Admittedly, his appreciation of the film may have had something to do with his brief cameo as a stormtrooper. But that's neither here nor there. What really matters is that - despite his nostalgia for the original trilogy – Smith sincerely enjoyed the prequels. When asked during a Q/A what changes he would make to Episodes I through III, Kevin adamantly replied “none”. Fan service aside, he was thrilled to once more visit the galaxy far, far away – to explore more of George Lucas' incredible imagination. So rather than pick out each piece of clunky dialogue, or groan at every mention of Midi-chlorians, he simply sat back and enjoyed the ride...
