Force-Sensitive Droids And Why They Were So Rare
Whether it be for war, maintenance, diplomacy, or medical purposes, droids in Star Wars could really do it all. Despite their diverse skill set, however, most mechanical entities simply could not tap into the mystical energy field. So, why was this? And who were the droids who seemingly broke convention and utilised the Force? Well, let's find out!
By definition, the Force was an energy field that connected all living things in the galaxy, and could be utilised by those sensitive to it. But were droids considered alive? Well, yes and no. On one hand, droids were fully self-aware and conscious beings. On the other, they were merely mechanical systems programmed to enact a multitude of different tasks. The real kicker, however, were the microscopic, intelligent life forms that resided within the cells of all living organisms. I know, I know... I just mentioned the dreaded 'M' word. Though no matter what Maz Kanata and J.J. Abrams imply, midi-chlorians will always exist so long as The Phantom Menace remains canon. This means that droids will forever be cut off from the Force, given their lack of blood circulation.
Despite their disconnect from the energy field, some droids were still able to wield the Force thanks to Star Wars Legends and Infinities. Take the Iron Knights, for example: they were Force-Sensitive Shards who adopted droid bodies so to interact with the world. This allowed them to partake in not only The Yuuzhan Vong War, but also the Arkanian Revolution - where they assisted a team of Jedi dispatched by the Galactic Republic. And who could possibly forget about Skippy the Jedi Droid? Yeah, this story is as non-canon as non-canon can possibly get, so I won't go into too much detail. But to give you a rough idea, the astromech droid from A New Hope renown for its busted motivator is actually a hero in disguise. You see, in some wacky parallel universe, R5-D4 was in fact Force-sensitive - meaning he could envision the turbulent state of the galaxy if R2-D2 had never met Luke Skywalker. So, rather heroically, R5 sabotaged himself so that Uncle Owen would choose another droid. And the rest they say is history...
So there we have it; the reason why most droids failed to utilise the Force. But now I want to hear from you! Do you think droids should be able to tap into the mystical energy field?
