Star Wars Lore – Commander Appo
As a sergeant in the 501st Legion, Appo loyally served under Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker throughout the Clone Wars. He also stormed the Jedi Temple behind the newly-anointed Sith Lord Darth Vader in the midst of Order 66...
The Battle of Umbara
Bred on Kamino from the DNA of bounty hunter Jango Fett, Appo was specifically manufactured to serve the Grand Army of the Republic throughout the Clone Wars. His most noteworthy participation of which occurred in 20 BBY, although the complexity of retaking Umbara from the grip of the Separatists was gravely miscalculated. Initially, serving under Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker as a sergeant of the 501st Legion, Appo and company were able to push back the Umbaran forces. The tide of battle soon changed, however, when General Pong Krell took charge.
Renown for his cruel and extreme methods, Krell used his secret affiliation with the Separatists to sabotage the Republic from within. Firstly, the Besalisk Jedi Master placed clone troopers Jesse and Fives under military arrest for insubordination. This followed a failed attempt to invade Umbara's capital city, as well the successful occupation of a nearby airbase. And secondly, Krell tricked the 501st Legion and 212th Attack Battalion into attacking one another. It was only after the suffering of heavy casualties that the ruse unraveled.
Realising the treacherous ways of their Jedi General, members of the 501st Legion failed to execute Fives and Jesse for their supposed war crimes. What's more, Appo and his men bolstered an open rebellion against Krell, which culminated in his death. Somewhat ironically, the Besalisk was eventually laid to rest by one of his most loyal soldiers, “Dogma”. The unforgivable death toll of the campaign was not for nothing, however, given the Republic's eventual triumph on Umbara.
Following the events on Umbara, and due to his heroic leadership, Appo was granted the rank of clone commander. Unfortunately, his promotion coincided with the dawn of a new era - the rise of the Galactic Empire. With that came Order 66 and the subsequent destruction of the Jedi Order - a monumental task he began by storming the Jedi Temple behind the infamous Darth Vader. Appo found himself gunning down padawans and younglings alike until not a single “enemy” walked the once great halls. He then barred anyone from entering the headquarters, including Alderaanian senator Bail Organa. During the commotion, Appo and his men failed to notice the approaching Zett Jukassa who began freely cutting down members of the 501st Legion. The commander tried his best to fend off the the Jedi, although his efforts were in vain. Appo was left wounded, as a result...
