The Most Bizarre Sport in Star Wars is...

With a name like Star Wars, massive ground battles and epic space conflicts are difficult to ignore. However, due to the wealth of expanded universe material, the galaxy far, far away has truly become just that – a living, breathing universe. Even the smallest of details have such a vibrant and rich history behind them. It really is incredible. But what helps a fictional setting come to life? Perhaps it's having a plethora of characters with believable motivations. Maybe it has something to do with densely populated cities and worlds. Or could it be the inclusion of everyday activities? Take sports, for example: as something we all enjoy and harbour such passion for here on Earth, seeing aliens with a similar lust for these competitive games is incredibly immersive. Our first glimpse of a sporting event in Star Wars came midway through The Phantom Menace with the exceptional podrace. This high-octane and, let's face it, dangerous contest took the concept of something like NASCAR and propelled it to a whole other level of crazy. The Outlander Club in Attack of the Clones then reinforced the immense presence of sport in the galaxy, depicting broadcasts of Odupiendo racing, grav-ball and nuna-ball - the latter of which is worth noting for its strange premise and bizarre rules...

Nuna-ball involves two teams made up entirely of droids and one nuna. The goal is to anger the small beast to the point where it inflates itself large enough for transportation to the opposition's goal. Then, when a game is won, an announcer shouts Nuuuuuuuunnnnnnaaaa! You know, just like Brazilian commentators whenever there's a goal scored in football. Strangely, however, nuna-ball is not the most bizarre sport in all of Star Wars. Yes, I kid you not. Both blob racing and mynock puffing are somehow equally as bad, if not worse, as the former entails racing between gelatinous blotches around a course of fine mesh screens and beds of nails, while the latter cruelly revolves around the tying of helium based grenades to mynocks until they explode. But the most bizarre sport in the entirety of the galaxy far, far away is...

Shockball. Get this, right: shockball is an outdoor team sport where the sole focus is to stun members of the opposite side with an electrically charged orb to the point of unconsciousness – and to win, one team has to simply boast more standing players by the end of the time limit. If that wasn't bad enough, not long after the Battle of Yavin saw the subjugation of many top shockball players to a sinister Imperial Intelligence operation – one which involved the unlawful injection of thought control drugs. Not much of a sport, right? To be honest, it sounds more like torture. And because of this, it proudly holds the mantle as the most bizarre sport in all of Star Wars...
