How Han Solo Met Chewbacca (Star Wars Legends)
Previously on LOST – or, I guess this mini-series – we took a look at the childhood and early adult life of Han Solo, at least according to Star Wars Legends. In fact, we explored his mysterious past all the way up to his chance encounter with a certain Wookiee. So as we continue our build to Solo: A Star Wars Story, let's uncover how exactly Han met and befriended Chewbacca.
Crushed by the departure of Bria Tharen – who left the up-and-coming pilot so to not hold him back – Solo's record at the Carida flight academy was rather mixed. On one hand, his marks for piloting always outweighed his academic success. But on the other – well, let's just say he struggled with behavioural issues. So while Han eventually went on to graduate at the top of his class – holding the rank of lieutenant, no less – he always sought a way to escape the incompetent officers, ridiculous regulations, and widespread anti-alien prejudice of the Galactic Empire. An opportunity for Solo to finally end his hard-earned military career arrived in 5 BBY, when he was dispatched to aid Commander Nyklas in the enslavement of Wookiees. Han, of course, quickly disobeyed orders to harm any of the Wookiees who had escaped a slaving craft. He even chose to later help the biggest and most rebellious of the group in a revolt against Nyklas – doing so by stunning the officer where he stood. With no Imperial career to fall back on, but a Wookiee sworn to his service through a life-debt, Solo began a new life – one as a smuggler.
Despite saving Chewbacca from a cruel, torture-induced demise – a feat he promised to fulfill following the sacrifice of Dewlanna – Han struggled to adjust to life with a Wookiee by his side. He just couldn't help but think about the life he had just thrown away, and would more often than not spend his nights drinking and playing sabacc. However, he quickly changed his mind about Chewbacca when his strength saved him from a nasty encounter. And from that point onward, their relationship only continued to blossom...
So what happened next? What adventures did Han and Chewbacca get up to in the years directly preceding A New Hope? Well, for that information, you'll just have to wait until the next episode in this mini-series – where we uncover how exactly Han befriended Lando Calrissian, not to mention his first encounter with the Millennium Falcon.
